How do I get my dog used to staying in a kennel while Im at work? He is on a dog prozac for sep anxiety! Help?

Exercise, exercise, exercise! Before leaving in the morning, this boy needs a good 45 to 60 minute walk - no kidding. Add to that either doggy day care OR the hiring of a dog walker (who is really willing to really exercise this boy) may solve many of ur problems.

You really do need someone to stop by the home at the 4 hour point (no dog should be asked to go much longer without a potty break) to get him out, exercised & tired out might also alleviate the need for Prozac.. something that really should be a last resort.

Consider using a doggy back pack to intensify the walks & give this working dog a job to do. Without being able to vent frustration through exercise, many dogs develop instability or issues such as 'separation anxiety.'

Bottom Line: dogs walk & a tired dog is a happier & healthier dog!

The dog needs to understand that the crate is a good place to be.

I saw this on Good Dog U a while back.

Start by u sitting next to the kennel with treats along with ur dog. Give ur dog positive re-inforcement just for being by the crate. Then put a treat just inside the crate door & praise him for getting it. Then put a treat a little further in, & so on. Once u get back to the crate, give him another treat while he is still in the crate & keep rewarding him. Then let him out of the crate. Do again, but have the dog go in their by himself, & then give the treat. After a while close the crate door for 5 seconds, let him out & give a treat. Slowing increase the time, & u can slowing start removing yourself from sight but always reward & praise then u return. You can then finally move to the stage where u walk out the door for 5 seconds then return.

Always make the crate accessiable to ur dog. This should be a place where he WANTS to go. not a place where he is forced to be when u leave.

Nothing happens over-night. This is going to be long slow process.

Why do you have a large breed active dog if you leave him in a crate during the day? Leave him outside, in your yard. If you live in a region that is too hot, you should not have a husky.

You're being extremely cruel by asking any dog, but especially a large one, to stay in a crate all day. You would not want to be forced to sit in your bathtub (same size-ratio) all day after sleeping all night. Prozac is not going to help, he needs exercise and to be outside.

He needs some training classes. Is the kennel large enough? How many hours r u gone in a day? I would try working on it throughout the day when u r home.. Put him in there for a few minutes or hour, praise & treat, then let him out. If he whines then squirt with a spray bottle or throw something at the cage just to scare him (only do this if the dog is howling). Do not talk to him what so ever. When there is 20 seconds of peace & quiet LOTS OF PRAISE/TREATS! I have Great Dane with seperation anxiety. I do not keep him in a kennel. He stays out in the garage with access to a ''paddock'' on the side of the house. He also lives with 3 other dogs. Good luck to you.

Have u tried taking him to a doggy daycare? Many dogs with separation anxiety go there while their owners r at work.
Your dog is obviously bored while u r at work & it does not need to be locked in a kennel/crate for 8 hours a day. Take him to doggy daycare so he can play while u r gone.

DO NOT listen to the person below me- u r NEVER supposed to throw or hit the dogs kennel/crate or spray the dog with water when it is barking/howling- that is just teaching it that u r a horrible pet owner & do not need a dog because ur impatient & do not know how to train a dog!

It irritates me that you put your dog on prozac. Why did you even get a dog if you are gone all the time? What do you expect that dog to do all day?
