l am being switched from one to the other and l am worried about an interaction with both in my system. What will happen if both are in my system at the same time. l have built up the prozac for 3 months and l read that it takes a bit to get out of your system.

What are the interactions of effexor and prozac.

I see ur concern. There should not be any interaction. Allow me to explain.

Prozac is a type of anti depressant called an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor).

Effexor is a type of anti depressant called an SNRI (selective serotinin & norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor)

Effoxor is in the same family of anti depressants. It just works on an extra chemical called norepinephrine.


Had u been switching off of Prozac, ur doctor would have done it gradually by decreasing how much u take it until u r no longer taking it. This is because if u just quit Prozac, u can develop serotonin syndrom which can be life threatening.

However, since u r switching from one serotonin medication to another, u r not at that risk. There r no serious interactions between the two. It might take a while getting used to Effexor since it is going to be affecting ur norepinephrine levels now too, but within a week u should get used to it.

If u experience any unusual symptoms do not be shy to consult ur doctor as there could still be allergic reactions associated with taking Effexor.
