At 15 I think u should take great care when thinking about taking this drug - FLUOXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE (Prozac)..
This drug has been known to increase or cause suicidal ideation, more especially in young men.
I have some understanding of ur feeling toward ur parents thoughts if they were to find u in need of antidepressants..
Do u not think that they could help you?
I have to say to you, if ur GP (doctor) has ur health, ur care in mind, he would not prescribe u any drug because u ask him/her to..
Can I ask u why u have chosen Prozac as the drug u will ask ur doctor to prescribe???
If u r suffering from depression, this drug may not be the most appropriate for you, for ur symptoms..
As for ur question of age & PROZAC ..
Your question seems to offer no reason why u feel u should be
prescribed an antidepressant.
Can u explain how u feel, why u think PROZAC is what u need!!!
To answer ur question of personal confidentiality between yourself & ur doctor..
I think this may depend upon ur needs.
From my experience, if u r suffering from some form of mental illness at ur age of 15, then I would say ur parents would need to be informed.
This I beleive is what would happen here in the UK..
As for the USA, then I cannot comment.
So many drugs we can only be precribed by a doctor here in the UK
Seem to have ''open house'' in America.
What I would like to say to u is if u r allowed this poteintially cazardous drug, without guidance, help from either ur parents or someone who can ''look out for you''.
Think long & hard before u go down this road.
As for me..
At ur age, I only hope u will not be allowed to ''just ask & be given'' PROZAC.
You need to talk to ur doctor, explain ur feelings, let he/she deciside what may be best for you..
Hope this helps u a little to understand..
Only want to help you.
I do not really think so, after all, Prozac is not the best anti-depressant on the market, and has not been the best for many years. Your GP will probably prescribe you something less addictive and harmful.
Yes you are allowed prozac, it is up to the doctor though - he/she will probably want your parents to know. It is an ethical dilemma for your doctor. There are other ways of feeling better too - counselling is one option and you should be able to get this free through your school (without parents finding out) - speak to your school nurse if you want it to remain confidential. The Bio chemical imbalance (chemical imbalances in your brain) has never been proved.
Pills unfortunately r not always the answer. At 15 I was prescribed Prozac (I did not really want medication) & all it did was make me worse. I was on it for a year before I managed to get onto something different - & I am lucky I survived that year!
If u have not already tried counselling for whatever problems u r experience, u need to do that first really. Pills only help if there is an actually illness to work on. Being 15 is a hard age no matter how good life is.it gets better on its own (for most people anyway!)
Prozac is now never prescribed to under 20 year olds by GPs. This followed concerns that it led to an increased risk of suicide.
15 year olds, so often full of teenage angst and insecurities seldom need medication for their mood states. The often do need reassurance and occasionally psychotherapy.
They can of course cash their own prescriptions.
in the US , maybe
i am not sure what the privacy rules for an antidepressant is.
in other countries, maybe not.
